Discovering God’s Purpose for Your Life
An accurate understanding of “God’s Purpose for Your Life” provides the answer to the question, “Why am I here?”
There is only one Biblical way to discover God’s purpose for your life—“by faith.” That’s why the author of the Book of Hebrews wrote, “…without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.” (Hebrews 11:6, NIV). The only way to ‘please God’ is to live out His purpose for your life, and that requires ‘faith.’
Every man or woman of God who accomplished great things for God was a man or woman of faith. That is the recurring theme of the Bible and is summarized in the 11th chapter of the Book of Hebrews. The author wrote, “By faith Noah…built an ark to save his family…” (Hebrews 11:7a, NIV). He wrote, “By faith Abraham…offered Isaac as a sacrifice…” (Hebrews 11:17a, NIV). He also wrote, “By faith Moses…refused to be known as the son of Pharaoh's daughter.” (Hebrews 11:24, NIV). A man without faith is a man without purpose!
Definition. Faith is the Spirit-led ability to see something God wants done, and the perseverance to do it according to Biblical principles. Failure to pursue God’s desires according to His principles always leads to failure and sometimes results in tragedy.
Ezra recorded an Old Testament story that graphically illustrates this fact. He wrote, “They moved the ark of God from Abinadab's house on a new cart, with Uzzah and Ahio guiding it…When they came to the threshing floor of Kidon, Uzzah reached out his hand to steady the ark, because the oxen stumbled. The LORD's anger burned against Uzzah, and he struck him down because he had put his hand on the ark. So he died there before God…David was afraid of God that day and asked, ‘How can I ever bring the ark of God to me?’ He did not take the ark to be with him in the City of David. Instead, he took it aside to the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite.” (I Chronicles 13:7…9-10…12-13, NIV).
Later David learned the lesson that God’s will must be done God’s way in order to have God’s blessing. Ezra wrote, “Then David said, ‘No one but the Levites may carry the ark of God, because the LORD chose them to carry the ark of the LORD and to minister before him forever’…He called together the descendants of Aaron and the Levites…He said to them, ‘You are the heads of the Levitical families; you and your fellow Levites are to consecrate yourselves and bring up the ark of the LORD, the God of Israel, to the place I have prepared for it. It was because you, the Levites, did not bring it up the first time that the LORD our God broke out in anger against us. We did not inquire of him about how to do it in the prescribed way.’ So the priests and Levites consecrated themselves in order to bring up the ark of the LORD, the God of Israel. And the Levites carried the ark of God with the poles on their shoulders, as Moses had commanded in accordance with the word of the LORD.” (I Chronicles 15:2…4…12-15, NIV).
